Updated Parkopedia app helps drivers in Japan with state-of-the-art parking data

As one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with nearly 60 million drivers1, parking space is very limited. The Garages Act 1962 (Shako Shomei Sho) requires motorists to provide proof of access to a local parking space within a 2 kilometer radius of their home.

The Parkopedia app, downloadable from the Apple App Store, provides drivers with the precise location of over 100,000 off-street parking lots across the country, along with details such as number of spaces, prices, hours of operation, height restrictions and whether electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are present.

The app also helps drivers comply with the country’s strict parking regulations and avoid costly fines. In Japan, street parking is generally prohibited in major cities, however, a limited number of exceptions are made for day and evening parking at metered locations, shown in the app. the Tokyo metropolitan area, with a population of over 37 million, sees motorists competing for a very limited number of on-street parking spaces. Parkopedia’s parking app allows drivers to find over 2,000 street locations in Tokyo and provides them with the precise information they need to park with ease.

In the near future, Parkopedia will add its dynamic parking service to the premium version of the app, which will be available for a single fee of 610 JPY. Dynamic predictive data provides drivers with space occupancy information and accurately predicts whether a space will be available at their arrival time, based on cutting-edge parking modeling research, which leverages parking payment transaction data, digital imagery and vehicle sensor data, to provide the highest quality predictions.

Eugene Tsyrklevich, Founder and CEO of Parkopedia, said: “Updating our parking app in Japan and now covering over 100,000 locations, we are able to better help drivers across the country find parking more easily. As part of our continued commitment to the Japanese market, we launched our dedicated Japanese subsidiary last year, while continuing to expand the coverage of our market-leading parking data.
