Former Eels flier Blake Ferguson was eyeing a return to the NRL after a turbulent short spell in Japan.

The 32-year-old joined NEC Green Rockets in Japan’s top rugby union competition but was released after being caught with cocaine in a Tokyo restaurant, spending 29 nights in jail.

Ferguson manager Sam Ayoub has told The Daily Telegraph the former Origin winger will contact clubs next week to seek a potential return to the Australian top flight.

After the Eels decided against re-signing him at the end of the 2021 season, Ferguson announced his shock cross-code change.

While his former club have been plagued with injuries in the outside back department, most recently Sean Russell’s punctured lung and broken rib, they are unlikely to make a play for Ferguson.

He was dropped for part of the 2021 season but showed he could still play in the NRL after an injury to Maika Sivo.

After he was jailed, a judge ruled the stay was sufficient punishment and had his passport returned last week, landing in Australia over the weekend.
